T-Shirt Cutting Tutorial

To explain this post a little.  It was originally posted by me in a Livejournal community a couple of years ago (before I met Toomaj and moved to Sweden).  There are a lot of tutorials on how to do this on you-tube these days, but I felt like sharing this regardless.

Snip snip!

Front

Back (My tattoo wasn’t even complete here!)

Snip and Twist T-shirt
Requires:-
T-shirt (preferably the errr finer grained type that roll easily when cut), Scissors, something to hold to bottom with (sewing it together, or ribbon or whatever… havent permanantised mine yet! Optional- Ruler and tailor chalk- if you want to cut on lines.

1. The first step I’ve done is to open out the shoulder area- by cutting it open – you can do this as wide or as closed as you prefer ^.^

2. Fold the t-shirt so that the back is folded in half vertically (middle of the back is the ‘hinge’ point as it were)- this allows you to make the cuts in half the number of snips- and allows greater control over ensuring the lengths are right.

( If you want you can mark using tailors chalk the distances between your snips horizontally across the back- and how far across your back you want it to be open- I just snip and see what happens.)

3. Snip horizontally down the back- taking the lengths as far as you want to go (think mine are about 15-20cm in total).  I normally make small cuts all the way down first so i can ensure im cutting the same distance each time.

4. Open the T-shit out so the back is facing you – it should look a little like:-

(added a line where it was folded to before)

5. Now comes the time to twist – take the top cut piece in your hand, and loop it over the second piece down- then taking hold of that second piece through the twist you’ve made, and looping it over the third – then taking the third piece and loop it over the fourth – like this:-

holding the 1st

the 1sthas been looped over, iam now holding the 2nd…

I have looped over the 3rd with the 2nd and am now holding the 3rd- the 4th I am now about to loop over the 3rd

Continuing down.

When you reach the bottom, you will need to somehow stop it unravelling- you can sew it together, or you could just use a ribbon or some such to tie it- I’ve just hasily used some string…..

Et Voila… and of course a worn shot…

There’s no reason you can’t repeat it again to make more detailed patterns- it will decrease the size of the back of the shirt- providing a basic shaping almost!

Done 3 times- made the t-shirt look fitted- drew down at the top, and lifted up at the bottom.

And as worn:-

I didnt do it the neatest- but you can seperate them out or bunch them together as you prefer…

and you can do it a lot neater of course :P

I hope that makes some sense, or that you can at least follow the pictures to make some sense!

Minimilk glittersplosion

This is my first franken, and it’s a bit of a strange one – for some reason I decided to mix and old loreal 105 Jetset with some glitters I had lying around.  I however quite like the result!

It took 2 coats for coverage and was a little slow on drying.

Close up shows it being slightly streaky on  my thumb but I wanted to show the glitter.

And some less bad pictures of my 2 ruffians from Scotland.

Hope it’s a nice day whereever you are!

New links!

Just added 2 links at the top – one to show previous art I’ve played at making, and one to show my crafting I’ve been up to! I’ll keep them updated for you here-on in.  I’d quite like to add a few more pages, but we shall see :)

I’ll leave you with a pile of bags I made last year – I take custom orders you know ;) haha

Slash slash, cut cut – decided to make a summery top out of 2 t-shirts (both bootlegs, one with a hole, one with an ugly pattern) – really appaling picture below – will try to get a better one next week!

Decided to crack out my OPI Hong kong collection mini’s after a disasterous drying on a fruity nails attempt (bubbles and just urgh), thumb nail is matte-ified.

Colour is Dim Sum Plum

Fully mattified the day after – I’m starting to see how the matte magic takes some colour out now…. bummer!

And finally EoTD

This time I decided to go for a rainbowy styled look with my Sugarpill using Gitterboi as a liner – I *think* it worked!

Photobucket

  • MAC Paint pot – Painterly
  • Fyrinnae Pixie Epoxy
  • Sugarpill pressed in – Tako, Afterparty, Dollipop, Buttercup.
  • Fyrinnae – Glitterboi
  • Benefit – Bad Gal (for the waterline)
  • Maybelline Mascara

A *lot* of colour in this attempt, but I think it works…. mostly :)

I can’t say I really like the use of the word hobo generally, but the quote above made me think of it all through making this bag!

This is a dry run for an eventual diaper bag I’m going to be making, but I wanted to test a few new ideas, on the whole it worked though there are a few bits that could be better to be honest.

The material is from ikea and the pattern is mostly from the failings in my own head.  The basic bag shape and remembering how to sew without it going the wrong way around comes from:-

http://tinyhappy.typepad.com/tiny_happy/2006/06/shoulder_bag_tu.html , with the tie taking inspiration from a Vans hobo bag I saw earlier. I tried to put a pleat into the front which while it works I font know how long it will work for.

Some more bad iphone pictures:-

Back, I’m a little disappointed I messed up so some of the pattern isn’t as visible as I thought it would be – though the squirrel off to the right hand side rocks!

another view from the first picture, showing the whole bag a little more clearly and the awesome random deer.

No eye of the day as there’s no makeup today!

Things to try on a Sunday 1 – bags!

So, sunny spring day again!

Here’s a few things I’m tempted to try to craft in the near future.
I *love* these recycling designs – I’d love to make a bag out of something like this for the summer.

I really want to make a new shoulder bag, I’m pretty sure that ‘hobo bag’ is the nearest thing to call it, but I’m having a hard time deciding how I should make it, think I might go for just random gem-pattern mayhem, but thinking generally along the lines of the tutorial below, but bigger.

And something lovely to read:-

Though I was very confused with the whole ’It’s autumn now’ thing till I realised she was in NZ… silly Gem.

Oh and while I remember – here’s the fail-eye-attempt number 2.

Yep rubbish lighting today, and grumpy looking gem.

Eyes

  • Urban Decay eyeshadow primer
  • Sugarpill loose eyeshadow in Hysteric and Tiara
  • Sugarpill pressed – cold heart palette
  • Urban Decay big fattie in purple haze

Face

  • Benefit ‘That Gal!’ primer
  • Benefit Flawless in shell

Lips

  • Benefit clear lipgloss

Regardless of fail I love purple.

I’m really getting into these loose eyeshadow things, think the UD primer is helping a lot though, it’s quite nice though because you can choose how bright you go with layering. I’m really hoping I can try out a dramatic look with them sooner or later.

Kinda wanting to extend my palette badly, and get another palette from www.sugarpillshop.com , though really I shoulda thought it out better in the first place and got the other two palettes… ah well!
